Working on the Palermo Cathedral
For the past two years, I have been doing the research and preliminary work for a drawing of the Palermo Cathedral in Sicily. The cathedral was built by the Norman rulers of the island in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Over the years, there have been extensive additions, renovations, and restorations, adding elements of Moorish, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical architecture.
Palermo Cathedral is an enormous building, with incredible patterns and details. I am still in the early stages of thinking through how to represent it in a drawing. After two research trips, there are still many unanswered questions. Fortunately, I will be back in Palermo in February for another visit to take photographs and draw..
